Benefits from aftermarket USB-C cables
EDIT: Increased score. With both the standard USB-C charge cable AS WELL as the included USB-C to standard A type, on a MacBook Pro, you only get USB 2.0 speeds. In those cases, it'll work with an NVMe drive as advertised, but only works as recovery. On the MacBook Pro 15, 2018, a Samsung 960 Pro with native read of 3,500MB/s and write of 2,100MB/s was running only at 40MB/sec. Theoretically, it should be at least 400MB/sec in USB 3.0 Superspeed and 800MB/sec with 3.1 Gen 2 speeds. I saw these slow speeds on both a direct USB-C to USB-C cable as well as a USB-C to standard USB connector that was included with the drive.I then used a Thunderbolt3 20Gbps certified cable. This allowed the drive to run at PCI Gen3 x2 speeds. Now I was getting 730+MB/sec writes and 991+MB/sec read.

Update. Try MANY different cables before giving up
Update Nov 24, 2018:I had used this before with many approved USB C 10Gbps cables (Google Pixel C and Choetech cables included) and a Cable Matters 6 ft TB3 cable, on Windows with TB3 & USB C Gen 2, and a 2018 Mac Mini with TB3. I kept getting in the range of 40MBps read and write speeds. Thought it was this enclosure being bad, but I just used a Cable Matters USB C (IF Certified 1M) cable, and on my new Mac Mini it is now getting over 800-900MBps every time with the Mac Mini. Sucks so many cables don't seem to work right, but I'm glad it's working now. This and a 1TB 970 Evo is a great fix to the new Mac Mini's overpriced storage options.Original Review:I read the review first before trying this and saw that people had better success with a TB3 cable (20gbps). I am using this enclosure with a WD Black m.2 NVME 500gb, a Cable Matters TB3 cable (40gbps), and my 2 lane TB3 port on my laptop (20gbps). This still as slow as on my desktop with a USB C cable and a USB C Gen 2 port (10gbps).This drive worked great in the laptop. I was matching the full speeds advertised. It is now far slower than my external hdd drive) I have it formatted as exFAT because I need to use it with two environments. Any ideas?

It Works But Cautious
At the time of the purchase, this is the only M.2 NVMe USB enclosure I can find on Amazon.-1: The M.2 rattle a bit in the enclosure, additional padding foam pads helps but not enough.-1: The USB enclosure doesn't pass through the M.2 manufacture information(Samsung 960 EVO) through the USB. As result, you can't use the free Samsung Data Migration software to transfer the OS/data from the old drive to the new drive.

Wouldn't read my already-formatted drive
Apparently this enclosure requires that the drive be formatted once it's installed, and will not work with drives that are already formatted. That's unfortunate as I had wanted to use this to read my old laptop SSD after installing a new one. The seller was helpful when I contacted them, but it does not appear that this will work for my needs. When I put my old PM961 into this, Linux could see the drive type correctly but thought it was unformatted, while Windows did not read the drive capacity correctly.

A device with potential. But not quite there yet.
Pro: The internal Chipset is a JMicron and it registers as a USB Attached SCSI Protocol (UASP) device under hardware management. Pro: Requires a min of .3A to run and have metered my device at a max draw of .78A. Con: Not eligible for booting most operating systems due to limited cluster sizing and must be re-formated to either 4 or 8K sectors (This may be due to my NVME device itself a SAMSUNG 960 EVO 256GB).Con: Temperature climbs rapidly under moderate file transferes and have had to run a fan across the shell when running large transfers. Neut: Connects to most of my devices including my Desktop and Android phone with average SATA speeds.A suggestion for the enginerds,Use Thunderbolt 3 for the header not just USB-C to boost throughput by x4. I'm willing to accept an increase of dimentions by a squint so that a microfan could assist with heat dissipation.

lose connection endlessly
build quality is not so good, especially the cable. And got a speed of normal SSD. If you don't have an extra nvme ssd it's not for you.-update : type-c part of cable is not solid. But I gave it one more star, because it shows good performance as an external case. One more it's nvme m.2 case, it's warm.-update : it loses connection endlessly, really annoying.changed cable and tried. still lose connections.

Total rubish
I have tried using this in lieu of a PCIe card that I must then boot to a portable environment to get data from M.2 SSDs and it has utterly failed every time. Waste of time and money.

Just to cool !!!!
This is great for backups, I've been using Casper backup, it it does boot up externally.
