The absolute gold standard nutrition/'diet' book - it should be essential reading for everyone
I have been waiting my whole life for a book like this. Dr Wolrich draws on the evidence base to deftly, indisputably, and thoroughly explain why so much nutrition and 'diet' advice in popular culture is based on inaccuracies, dodgy 'science' and sometimes downright lies invented to make money and/or attain fame.I like how Dr Wolrich clearly explains why diets don't work and what is actually happening in our bodies instead when we restrict and/or cut out food groups. I particularly love how he is 100% clear that a person's size is NOT indicative of their health status, for many reasons. Dr Wolrich gives the reader valuable information as to why it's far more complex than the hugely oversimplified societal messages that weight is all about personal responsibility and a simple equation of 'eat less, move more', which only provides a huge serving of weight bias and harmful stigmatisation of people in larger bodies. If you are one of those stigmatised people, you will get huge comfort from this element of the book alone. If you are someone who serves up the weight bias, hopefully you will never utter another word of it again with your newly attained knowledge of the reality.Dr Wolrich neatly powers through pretty much every diet trend and popular belief out there, from whether dairy is inflammatory and why eggs were thought to increase blood cholesterol, to diets such as keto and fasting. Needless to say, once he's dissected the original 'evidence base' behind these things, there is very little that he actually finds factual.I love Dr Wolrich's very easy-to-read and accessible writing style, with some moments of humour thrown in that made me laugh. Yet, despite this, throughout the book, he is outstandingly authoritative and respectful of different views (e.g veganism) Dr Wolrich shines of someone who is a genuine professional with no sneaky ulterior motive to profit from a 'diet' book just because they have medical credentials to make their diet sound legitimate.Dr Wolrich is a true credit to his profession - properly evaluating the evidence-base and research, and explaining in fine detail how the human body actually works. He clearly states the facts about why cutting out any nutrients inevitably compromises our health and functioning, and tells us why we shouldn't buy into the agenda that weight is an indicator of health, or that weight loss is the ultimate indicator that any positive lifestyle change is 'working'.I wish I could buy this book for everyone in my life who regularly spouts biased judgements about weight, assumes every person in a larger body is setting themselves up for health problems (or is to blame for the ones they do have), perpetuates weight stigma by buying into the messages we've been repeatedly exposed to over the years, and health-trolls people by trying to falsely justify their views as "it's all about health!". I also wish I could buy a copy of this book for all the people who are desperately trying to follow all these diet trends, feeling bad about their weight and have a psychologically distressing relationship with food and their bodies. This book is the absolute gold standard for anyone wanting to learn more about nutrition and how to keep themselves healthy. It stands head and shoulders above any other book written in the medical nutrition (or 'diet', in some cases) field. If I had my way, it would be the only book out there for sale, to stop others following faddy, and sometimes dangerous, diet trends and/or continuing to hold inaccurate beliefs about nutrition and weight.I am so glad I own this book. I am definitely going to leave it lying on my coffee table when certain people in my life are visiting, in the hope that maybe they can see the light at last. The evidence that Dr Wolrich provides for his conclusions is unarguable and he has done a superb job of presenting it very strongly and clearly so it's understandable for a wide range of readers. If your finger is hovering over the Buy button, definitely press it immediately. I don't normally review books, but I felt strongly that I must review this one because it is likely to totally change your life, and maybe even those of others around you.
