Very misleading product but somewhat useful
I disassembled one of my flashlights and traced the wiring to learn whether this is really a scam as a few negative reviewers say. The answer is mostly "yes, it is a scam" but the flashlight does have its uses, particular at a very low price. This is actually two separate products in one: a disposable non-rechargeable flashlight and a hand-cranked flashlight. The on/off switch switches the flashlight between the two modes. When you turn the switch "on" there is a nice bright light powered by three disposable alkaline button batteries. These batteries never recharge and are not replaceable without destroying the flashlight, so when they run out, the "on" mode will never work again. If you crank the flashlight when it is "on" you are wasting your effort, the generator is not connected. On the positive side, these batteries last a surprisingly long time -- several hours at full brightness and for many hours more with a dimmer light. When the switch is "off" then squeezing the crank actually generates electricity to power the light, and the light is bright enough to be useful. However, because the generator isn't hooked up to the battery, you only have light while you are actively cranking. Cranking for any significant length of time is tiring and would only be useful in an emergency or if you were trying to build-up the muscles in your hands.Though the description of the product is misleading and most of the buyers misunderstand how it really works, this flashlight could still be useful. If you need an emergency flashlight that will be rarely used, the disposable batteries will probably provide you with the power you need and the crank will give you a back-up even if the batteries fail. For the few dollars these cost, I don't know if we can expect much more than that.

Buy these and you will die in the woods
Absolute trash. I, too, was lured in by the low price, but immediately upon opening the boxes and trying the hand-crank flashlights out, one of them broke. It would make a rattling, humming moan and would not charge no matter how much I squeezed the handle. Sorry, but if these are your emergency back-ups then you're going to be left in the dark. Spend a few more bucks and get a hand-crank flashlight that actually works. Do you really want to rely on such a cheap piece of junk when your power is out? Imagine you're deep in the woods with lions and tigers and bears lurking about in the shadows...you squeeze and squeeze the cheap little plastic noisemaker in your hand, but its light refuses to shine. Congrats on saving a few bucks, now you're dinner.

A SIMPLE SOLUTION for TOTAL NOCTURNAL DARKNESS
Of the world's 7.4 billion population and rising every day there are 1.3 billion who live in Total Nocturnal Darkness, generally because of anarchy, a worthless currency on foreign exchange, and vast areas such as essentially all of the Congo (DRC), where we witnessed first hand as medical missionaries the severe limitation on all human endeavors when attempting to function in TND. A hand cranked flashlight, one per family unit, would make a tremendous difference. As a missionary surgeon, eager to follow the Great Commission as commanded by our Lord, I am not ashamed in the least to place an appropriate Scripture and logo in one's native tongue such as Psalms 119:105, "The Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path!" I am reminded of two patients in separate events one moon lit night walking on a trail without a flashlight, stumbling on what most likely were Gabon pit vipers, with gross evidence of a profound clotting disorder, and barely sufficient equine antivenin from the Pasteur Institute in France to treat one patient. Neither survived the night! We personally have supplied some 3,000 hand cranked flashlights to Congo, South Sudan, and most recently to marginalized Indian populations in the hills of Guatemala. How I wish we could do more . . ..... or better yet, how I wish those with the necessary funds and political clout to provide this very simple tool far and wide would listen up! Rev. Franklin Graham of Samaritan's Purse has shown nominal interest but is not yet convinced that TND is a challenge every bit as important as safe sewage disposal, potable water, immunizations, family planning, etc.If you feel led to do so, please contact me at rtolls@gmail.com. The developing world needs the Gospel and very simple energy renewable "intermediate technology" Dr. TOLLS

Worst Product On Amazon. Believe the Negative Reviews.
Horrible! Don't waste your money. Shame on Amazon for carrying such junk. The hand crank does not charge the battery! The 3 LEDs are very bright when first turned them on, and last quite a long time on the full battery. However, once the battery is depleted, no amount of cranking will bring it back - in other words, once the non-replaceable battery is dead, the LEDs only work while the handle is being cranked - hardly practical! And certainly not how the light is described!! This is nothing but non eco-friendly disposable Chinese junkI I sent mine back. The only good thing about these flashlights is Amazon's excellent return policy. If you do buy these lights, turn one on as soon as you receive it, wait until it dies, and then try to "recharge" the battery with the hand crank. You'll be sending yours back as well.

Great value, work well, but don't drop.
I have a bunch of these through my house as safety if power goes out, a few in tool boxes, my car, etc. They work pretty damn well for the cost.Only downside is, if you drop them, it's game over. I dropped one from maybe 4 feet onto hardwood, and it basically exploded. So just be careful. That being said, they do last. The first one I bought I've had like 5-6 years now, and it's still working just fine. So they are great and reliable, just not rugged.

Good value
I purchased these hand crank flashlights to put into the Samaritan's Purse Shoeboxes that get sent overseas and delivered to impoverished children. I tested them all before including them in the boxes and there were no problems. They are a perfect hand held size and make a great addition to the shoeboxes. Casts a decent beam for its size. You can't beat the price, either. A real value. Unfortunately I won't be able to attest to their longevity, but I am hopeful that they will last.
