If The X-Files had a love child with the Aliens movie franchise....
If The X-Files had a love child with the Aliens movie franchise, then raised it to be a B movie ... this is what you'd get. At one point, one of the characters even says "this is like a bad Sci-Fi movie," which had me laughing out loud and ... yep! Really bad. That's why it's sooo good. Go into this one knowing it's awful and you won't be disappointed. It is that bad, so for me to give this movie five stars is pretty remarkable considering I loathe spiders, and am no great fan of horror. The scariest part of this movie (for me, anyway) was near the start when real tarantulas were wandering around and climbing on some of the actors. Eeek! Once the monster spiders got bigger, they weren't as frightening, then they were just funny. So, why the five stars? Mainly because the rest of the movie spent some quality time poking fun at itself and other movies of this genre (scary, mutant creatures menacing the earth, like from the 1950s--in fact, I think they threw some radiation in, just for the fun of it). Believe it or not, this arachnophobic monster mash works really well as schlock comedy.Fun parts include (*mild spoilers included below*):1) Marci's transformation. Near the beginning something happened that made me think, "she's going to end up carrying a bazooka before this is over" and sure enough..... As the story unwinds, Marci loses her glasses (real ones, btw, which I actually appreciate although I did spend the rest of the movie wondering how she could see!). Next she ditches her jacket, then her sensible button-down shirt. By the end she's Sigourney Weaver's Ripley and you almost believe it.2) A Man in Black named Murphy is directed to "go check over there," separating him from the others, and again I'm thinking, "that guy is toast. Or maybe not, because he actually seems to have half a human soul...." I'll leave you to wonder which way the story went.3) At one point the spider belches. I laughed. Hard.4) The spider has super-arachnid qualities: for example? taking over an entire military base within, like, 30 minutes tops. Webs slung all over the place, bodies dangling like in a meat locker. One spider managed to do all that in 30 minutes?! We're all doomed.5) There was a Spider-Kong moment.6) There was a 'don't turn your back on the bad guy' moment that I have to admit, surprised me.7) While someone was stuck in a web and the very menacing spider was approaching, 'The Itsy-(not-so)-Bitsy Spider' started playing.8) About 90% of the dialogue was horrible, but even so, Lana Parilla, Josh Green and Oliver Macready all managed to make me believe they were stuck in the bowels of a secret government base, battling a monstrous super-spider.9) Speaking of Lana Parilla, if you don't know who she is by now, I highly encourage you to enjoy her chewing the scenery as the Evil Queen in Once Upon a Time. Especially during the first couple of seasons, you'll be jerked back and forth between hating her and loving her. The fact that Lana can actually make you love a homicidal sociopath is pretty darn amazing. Not so fun parts:1) Mulder and Scully never did show up.2) Neither did Jones the Cat, which was a crying shame all things considered. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, go watch the original Alien starring Sigourney Weaver.)3) I think I saw some real calculus on one of the blackboards pertaining to the spider's projected growth rate. Let's talk about nightmares, shall we...?

This is one FUN!...FUN!...FUN!...killer spider flick!
So far being that it is now 2010, this is still in my top 5 when it comes to Horror films that involve killer spiders. Its in my top 10 in killer bug flicks. When seeing 'SPIDERS' for the first time, I was surprised at how great it actually was, and still is! At that time, I was expected the typical SyFy Channel, run-of-the-mill crap that had been pumped out left and right at that time, but no, I was wrong! You might laugh but I looked at this as a surprise just as the same way I felt for a little Horror flick titled 'CUBE' that I (and a million others), discovered on SyFy Channel. Every now and then that channel will surprise me, even today. Unlike 'CUBE', the story is not that original, but come on people haha...its a great popcorn munching flick that isn't meant to take itself too seriously. This flick deals will spiders being experimented on with alien DNA that happen to get loose. They all range in different sizes and there's a nice giant surprise at the end!!! How that giant surprise comes about, is a treat! This flick is more of a tribute to cheesy 50's creature flicks that thrived on giant bugs attacking folks, but in a modern way. The same way 'Mosquito' and 'TICKS' achieved. What I love about 'SPIDERS', is that its not filled with dumb slap-stick comedy as seen in 'Eight-legged Freaks'. Unlike that one, 'SPIDERS' is truly a Horror film. It does have humor but its very little and doesn't overkill. Over all, the acting, pace, music score, and special effects are awesome!!! There were truly some scenes that had me jump and that's coming from a person that doesn't have fear of bugs. lol! To me, it uses both top-notch CGI and old school makeup effects. If your a fan of 50's creature features or the two flicks I've mentioned, check 'SPIDERS' out!

Come on...
The movie got to me early, which is great, but there were some problems. I don't know if this is due to the shipping/traveling or because of ownership, but the outside of the dvd case and the cover art both have damage. Also, there was something wet on the back of the dvd case, I wiped it off and washed my hands; but it was still odd. The disc seems clean, but it skipped over whole scenes at the beginning and end. Really disappointed.

Hidden gem
This was a good movie that somehow went under the radar. It has good special effects, good characters, and a decent enough story. This movie is a bit hard to find, so you might have to shell out over $8 for it. It also has a sequel Spiders 2.

Pass the cheese please
A space shuttle said to have burned up in reentry actually crashes in front of a conspiracy theorist (Lana Parrilla) and friends. On board all are dead, almost. Not due to the crash but due to an experiment gone awry. Alien DNA experiments on a rare breed of spider that plants an egg inside the lone survivor hatches in a secret lab and runs amok. The conspiracy theorist and friends hide in a truck that takes them to the secret lab. They are now among the amok. The movie starts out plain, almost amusing. However, when the spider egg hatches (from the survivor’s mouth) the resulting spider keeps growing. This is where it goes from amusing to all out camp. As the spider grows it goes from camp to delicious cheeze. This is “B” movie fun. It’s fast paced. The CGI is bad which is what you would expect from a “B” movie. The acting is decent and there is a fair amount of over acting which adds to the fun. Then there’s the gun fire, the explosions, the running and the screaming. Perfect. If you like your cheeze extra thick, you will love this movie.

"A Great Spider Film!"
This is mostly my favorite Spider film next to "Eight Legged Freaks". For one thing this doesn't have comedy. It's a plain horror film all the way through. If you're looking for gore in this film. There are some. But plenty of bloody violence. No particular actors and actresses I know in this film but it got a lot of bloody action and plenty spider scenes. I recommend this if you love Spider films to watch.
