Mushroom growing: a complete guide
Not having any experience actually growing mushrooms, at first glance, I was not inclined to read this book. Then I thought about all the other vegetables and fruit trees I’ve grown and the fact that mushrooms grow wild in my yard when the conditions are right, and decided to give the book a try. I’m glad I did. I now know ten times more about mushrooms and am inclined to give growing some of them a try. This book really opened my eyes. The book is well written and nicely illustrated. It covers the subject area thoroughly, with chapters on: life cycle, growing conditions, growing process, growing methods, preparation, and more. Here is an example of some introductory text, “Over 20,000 varieties of mushrooms are known in the world today, with more being discovered all the time. It is thought there are between 50,000-100,000 more varieties that haven't been found or identified. There are edible varieties, like the ones we talk about growing in the guide. There are toxic varieties, medicinal and psychoactive mushrooms, and a weird, wide, wondrous world in between.”The book points out that there are some advantages to growing your own mushrooms compared to simply foraging for them. Having complete control over the process means adding reliability to harvests, and reducing many variations that are present in wild mushrooms. The best tribute that I can give to this book is the fact that after reading it, I am seriously considering growing some mushrooms at home.

Clear, organized, and simple to read
Richard, thank you for this wonderful book. I'm about a third of the way through and it's keeping me up at night, peaking my curiosity in ways I haven't felt in a long time. I am really interested in this subject, and as I writer myself, I admire you for writing a whole book about mushrooms for home growers. I really would have liked a Glossary of Terms at the back of the book to reference, as the mushroom-speak is all new to me, otherwise, I am really happy I got this book for Christmas!!

Easy read
Would have given 5 stars if the pictures of mushrooms were in color for the price paid. But good information.

If you already know the benefits of mushrooms, this is the book on how to raise them!
Richard Bray did an excellent job of filling a gap in the mushroom space by telling us *exactly* how to raise them. Since becoming a customer of Four Sigmatic, I've learned a lot about the "why" of mushrooms which leads to questions of "how." Mr. Bray answers those questions with clarity without laboring the reader with irrelevant extras.Do you want to raise Lion's Mane? Look on page 41 and find out 1) Its ideal fruiting temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees F; 2) It only takes 8-10 weeks (once it starts fruiting) and 3) its preferred place to grow is on supplemented hardwood. This information is right under the subtitle and gives you enough to see if this mushroom is doable for you. After that, each variety has a few pages dedicated to its variations. But, that's just the beginning. This book has a ton of information! The third point I mentioned for Lion's Main is it prefers supplemented hardwood. Page 126 is titled "Growing On Supplemented Hardwood Sawdust." The next seven pages instruct the reader on the intricacies of making an acceptible medium for Lion's Mane's substrate. I could go on . . .In summary:1. If you're not sold on the incredible benefits of mushrooms, check out to Four Sigmatic.2. If you are sold on the value of mushrooms and want to raise your own, buy, read and follow this book. You'll be glad you did.

Type of information you want to know
I feel like the pictures would be better if they were in color so that the description in writing can come to life:

Very Basic. If you have grown Mushrooms before. Look elsewhere. New to Mushrooms. This is for you.
This was very basic. If you have never grown mushrooms and need to start. This will help. But it is only a starting point. It doesn't cover all mushrooms and/or all ways to grow them. It is the information I learned from watching a couple of free videos on Youtube. The book was released in this hardcover book but was not updated or errors fixed. I am not saying you can't learn from this. If you have grown mushrooms. This might be less educated than you need. High-end information is not in here. This book needs a modern release with updated info and pictures. I gave it 3 Stars. That's my view. A first-time grower might give it a 5.

Why there is NO MENTION of poisonous mushrooms???????????
I would think that one of the MOST important subjects of mushroom cultivation is POISONOUS mushrooms. How to identify them and discard them. This is serious because poisonous mushrooms can be FATAL. Yet, the author never even mentioned this subject!!!!!!!!!! For this reason, this book is worthless!! I am so disappointed!!!!
